MUSINGS, DOINGS AND DABBLINGS OF A CITY GIRL FROM TEXAS LIVING A DUSTY LIFE IN THE WILDS OF OKLAHOMA...
nature, food, travel, garden, photography, family, a bit of style and a heaping helping of silliness... just for the hilarity of it all...
Talon is a big fan of the movies and the Indy Jones Legos XBox games. He has been making pretend whips out of stray long strings, straps and cords for two years. Now he can dress up as Indy anytime he wants.
Here is a photo of a random stranger taking a photo of Indy.
That is my shadow in the bottom left corner.
It is a cute costume, isn't it. And it isn't a storebought costume but bits and pieces thrown together which makes it look more authentic, don't you think. The toughest part to find was the shirt. There was nary a boys expedition type shirt to be found anywhere. So where did I find it? Goodwill. And don't you dare tell him it is actually a ladies size small.
So yes, Indy was quite popular and greeted by name at almost every stop. Except by a couple of folks who said: Safari Man!
Hmm, where have they been the last thirty years?
The community Halloween festivities in Oklahoma are quite charming and very convenient.
Downtown shopowners wear costumes and pass out candy to parading trick or treaters. Churches and organizations set up trunk or treats and free carnivals (games/bouncy slides not rides) in parking lots.
Some parents and most of the canines dress up too.
And the kids are adorable...
This year, Talon tackled two nearby towns. One is best for candy and the other is best for games. And Talon is boy who likes to cover all the bases.
A mosaic of a few of the games and sliding. Talon tried and tried to win a cake but it just wasn't to be this year. I won a bag of peanut butter cookies though. It was an all encompassing combo cake/cookie/cupcake walk.
The most ususual game this year was this sanitary apple bobbing game:
The apples swing on strings and it is quite the challenge to catch one. Each child keeps their apple and a new apple is impaled on the screw for the next contestant.
Here is a video to see the game in action:
There were a few creeps and ghouls out...
But Indy wasn't scared!
Is this the set for Raiders of the Lost Ark 2?
Ha, no-- it is just a treasure hunting game but it made for a perfect Indiana Jones photo op.
Jim finally wore this costume-- he has planned to wear it the last two years to the renaissance festival but we didn't go. It is just a costume but Jim walked around with such a pious demeanor that the Okies weren't sure if it was a costume or not! Lots of double takes!
The is the monument that raised a hullabaloo. The city was forced to move it a few feet from the courthouse lawn to the lawn of the American Legion hut. Notice the misspelling in commandment seven-- Too funny!
Funny but eeyew!A parent brought this to the school party...
Would you like a serving? Like I mentioned a few posts ago, Talon is squeamish. He absolutely would not touch this cake with a ten foot pole-- just seeing the picture on the computer icks him out.
Last year, we serendiptously discovered Checotah's Halloween extravaganza-- it was quite the unexpected lagniappe so we made a point to attend this year. Click here to read about our 2009 Checotah adventure.
So much better than Stigler-- downtown is blocked off; store owners dress up and everyone is happy and friendly. Alleys and adjacent parks are decorated for kids to walk through and trick or treat. A church parking lot holds a huge trunk or treat.
Witchy Woman
Talon sitting in for Witchy Woman-- Watch out, he'll cast a spell on you with his prize boomerang!
Isn't that a fabulous witch hat?! Cool tights and splendid pointy chin-- This witch has got it going on!
On a side street, we discovered a carnival hosted by the fire dept. Lots of fun and games-- Talon bobbed for apples and even won another cake at the plunko game. I didn't get a photo of the apple bobbing unfortunately-- Talon cheated by biting it by the stem. Too funny-- the outsmarted teens running the bobbing started removing stems fast and furiously.
Isn't this a fun costume! Looks easy to make too!
six month old Great Dane with a headless horseman costume
Stigler's trick or treating event was Friday night. This year was hohum--- few store owners or parents wore costumes and most didn't seem into the fun of Halloween. I only spotted three photo worthy items of interest. To see last years event for comparison click here.
Dorothy and Toto-- how precious!
Awww...
Convict passing out candy for the Police Dept
Ah! Now I get it-- No wonder Halloween was hohum-- Christmas has already arrived in Stigler! hahahaha
I really like Talon's teacher. Most school parties involve eating and booting out the door home but Mrs. F always has fun projects and events for the kids-- all the time-- and for the Halloween party she went all out.
Pumpkin decorating
Masterpiece!
Boxes of icky vampire eyes, goblin guts, and rotten fingers for the kids to feel.
Talon is squeamish and could barely stand the fingers...
the eyes and guts weren't any better
Party snacks-- Now that is more like it!
Talon told his teacher I would make homemade chocolate chip cookies for his party-- which I did but they just aren't very Halloweeny so I also made...
Gingerbread pumpkin cutouts with lemon glaze and green sugar stems. This is the bottom layer so looks a bit beat up. Yummy-- not homemade though-- it is Betty Crocker cookie mix. Our favorite since it isn't too strong. I baked only 5 minutes so the cookies stay soft and moist.
Halloween at this school is such fun! The little kids (PreK-3rd) sing at the bank and nursing home. The bank gives each child a Halloween bag full of goodies then the kids trick or treat at other businesses in town to add to the bounty!
On the bus... is it Optimuses or Optimai? And I'm not stealing this joke from you Leslie. I was saying this all morning like a geek and heehawing to myself (prior to our facebook chat)-- No one laughed but me.
Kindergarten lining up outside the bank-- whoa, check out those boots!
Groovy! Looks like disco boots to me but the owner said they were go-go boots. Regardless, I need a pair!
creepy automaton
This year the bank had a Tunnel of Terror-- a fun crew at the bank-- they go all out to help the community. A bit too scary for little kids with all the fog, webs and real people hidden amongst the automatons. Too bad the 4th-6th graders didn't get to go to the bank-- they would have loved it!
A real creepy corpse--- would you ask this gal for a loan?
Or this guy? He stayed very still with a bucket of candy in his lap-- when little hands reached so did he.
